Davion Deshoun Washington, a 38-year-old resident of Los Angeles, California, tragically lost his life on August 27, 2015. The incident occurred in the Gramercy Park neighborhood, specifically in the 2100 block of West Century Boulevard. On that fateful evening, Washington was among a group of people gathered in the narrow courtyard of an apartment complex. Around 6 p.m., two unidentified black men approached the group and opened fire, striking three individuals, including Washington.
The assailants then fled the scene in a light-colored sedan, heading east on West Century Boulevard. Washington was rushed to Harbor-UCLA Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead at 6:59 p.m. The other two victims, a 33-year-old man and a 29-year-old man, sustained injuries but survived the attack.
The Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) launched an investigation into the shooting, with the Criminal Gang Homicide Division taking the lead. Despite efforts to gather information and identify the perpetrators, the case remains unsolved. The LAPD has urged anyone with information to come forward, offering anonymity through Crime Stoppers. The incident was part of a particularly violent month in Los Angeles, which saw a significant number of homicides, highlighting the ongoing issue of gun violence in the city.
Washington's death was a devastating blow to his family, especially his mother, Valerie Sherman. Sherman had already endured the loss of another son, Wayne Jamar, who was shot and killed in South Los Angeles in 2005. The pain of losing two sons to gun violence within a decade was overwhelming for Sherman, who expressed a desire to become more involved in community efforts to combat violence. The tragic circumstances surrounding Washington's death underscore the broader challenges faced by communities grappling with the impacts of violent crime.
