Luke Burns, a 16-year-old student from Exeter Union High School, tragically passed away on October 4, 2015, in the Horse Creek Meadows area of the Sequoia National Forest. Luke was an avid outdoorsman, passionate about hunting and fishing. On that fateful day, he was participating in a hunting expedition with family and friends. The accident occurred around 8 a.m. when Luke, who was hidden behind some brush, inadvertently wandered in front of other hunters. One of the hunters, unaware of Luke's presence, fired a shot that struck him in the torso. Despite immediate attempts by family and friends to administer CPR and first aid, Luke succumbed to his injuries before reaching the California Hot Springs Ranger station.
The Tulare County Sheriff's Department, along with the Department of Fish and Game, conducted an investigation into the incident. Detectives from the Sheriff's Department's Violent Crimes Unit were called to the scene, but the shooting was ultimately deemed an accident. The Sheriff's Department used this tragic event to remind hunters of the importance of firearm safety, emphasizing the need to be aware of one's surroundings and to ensure a clear line of sight before discharging a weapon.
There were no arrests or charges filed in connection with Luke Burns' death, as the investigation concluded that it was an accidental shooting.
