Francisco Javier Alvarez, a 49-year-old resident of Los Angeles, California, tragically lost his life on October 18, 2015. The incident occurred in Pacoima, near the transition of the westbound 118 Freeway and the northbound 5 Freeway. According to the Los Angeles County coroner’s records, Alvarez was shot and killed around 11 a.m. near a homeless encampment adjacent to Paxton Park.
Alvarez, who lived in the camp, was engaged in a conversation with three other acquaintances from the same camp when a dispute arose. During the altercation, one of the individuals produced a firearm and shot Alvarez multiple times. He was pronounced dead at the scene at 11:28 a.m.
The suspect, identified as Jovanny Valenzuela, was apprehended within minutes of the shooting as he attempted to flee the area. Valenzuela, who had turned 22 just the day before the incident, was arrested and charged with murder, possession of a firearm by a felon, and possession of ammunition. He was held in lieu of $1 million bail and was scheduled to be arraigned on November 10, 2015, in the Los Angeles County Superior Court in San Fernando.
The investigation into Alvarez's death revealed that all parties involved were familiar with each other, although the specific details of the dispute that led to the shooting remain unclear. The Los Angeles Police Department's Foothill Homicide Division handled the case, with Detective Manuel Armijo leading the investigation.
