Robert James Eugene Ellis, a 27-year-old man from Los Angeles, California, was tragically shot and killed on March 25, 2016. The incident occurred in the 5500 block of South Vermont Avenue in the Vermont Slauson area. According to the Los Angeles County coroner’s records, Ellis was standing in a strip mall with a group of people when a gunman approached from the north side of the shopping center and opened fire.
Ellis was struck by the gunfire and was subsequently taken to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 3:56 p.m. The gunman fled the scene, heading west on West 55th Street.
The investigation into Ellis's death revealed that the shooting was gang-related, although Ellis himself was not a gang member. The Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) launched an extensive investigation, which included publicizing surveillance footage and offering a $50,000 reward for information leading to the arrest of the suspect. On May 5, 2016, Tyrone Foster, a 22-year-old man, was arrested on suspicion of murder at a hotel in Hawthorne. Foster was charged with one count of murder with gun and gang allegations. The prosecution argued that Foster opened fire because he believed rival gang members were in the group that included Ellis. Foster's trial began in late 2017, and after weeks of testimony, a jury found him guilty of first-degree murder and five counts of attempted murder with gang and gun allegations. On December 14, 2017, Foster was sentenced to 90 years to life in prison.
The case had a profound impact on Ellis's family and the community. His mother, Lenell Ellis, was a vocal advocate for justice, distributing over 800 fliers and maintaining regular contact with detectives. She attended nearly every court date, emphasizing the importance of her son's life and the need for justice. The sentencing of Foster brought some closure to the family, but the loss of Robert Ellis continues to be deeply felt by his loved ones. His mother described him as a "good guy" who made those around him laugh and had dreams of starting a clothing line or becoming a barber.
