After a brief exchange of words between the passenger and Brisa's brother, the passenger pulled out a gun and opened fire.
Both siblings were struck by the bullets; Brisa was critically injured and later succumbed to her wounds at a nearby hospital, while her brother survived and was listed in stable condition.
The investigation into Brisa's death was extensive and led to the arrest of two suspects, Emilio Silva, 19, and Juan Carlos Cruz, 24. The Modesto Police Department conducted a months-long investigation, which culminated in the arrests of Silva and Cruz in September 2016. The suspects were found at a home in Empire, where officers also recovered loaded guns and ammunition. Both men were charged with murder, although authorities did not specify which of the two fired the fatal shots.
