Deborah Gutierrez, a 34-year-old Latina, tragically lost her life on July 23, 2016, in Pomona, California. The incident occurred around 3:30 a.m. at the intersection of North San Antonio Avenue and East 1st Street. Gutierrez was in the passenger seat of a vehicle driven by her boyfriend, the father of her two children. As they stopped at a red light, a dark-colored 2000 Cadillac DTS pulled up beside them, and the driver began shooting.
Gutierrez was struck multiple times, while her boyfriend sustained a superficial gunshot wound. Despite his injuries, her boyfriend attempted to chase the assailant for several blocks before seeking help from nearby officers. Gutierrez was rushed to a hospital but was pronounced dead at 4:03 a.m.
The investigation quickly led to the arrest of Robert Lee Brogan, a 23-year-old documented gang member from Pomona. Brogan was seen parking the Cadillac and walking away shortly after the shooting. He was apprehended and charged with murder and attempted murder. Investigators found a handgun believed to have been thrown from Brogan's vehicle. Despite his gang affiliation, the motive for the shooting remained unclear, and it appeared to be an unprovoked attack. Brogan was held without bail and faced charges that included the special circumstance allegation of intentional murder perpetrated by firing a gun from a vehicle.
In September 2018, Brogan pleaded no contest to one count each of voluntary manslaughter and attempted murder. He was sentenced to 30 years in state prison. The case highlighted the senseless nature of the violence, as Gutierrez and her boyfriend had no known connections to Brogan or any gang affiliations.
