Jennifer Ann Dickerson, a 31-year-old aspiring rapper from Compton, California, was tragically killed on July 29, 2016, in Harbor City, Los Angeles. The incident occurred around 1:50 p.m. at a barbecue stand in the parking lot of a Pep Boys store on the 1300 block of West Pacific Coast Highway. Dickerson was working at the Wheaton's Eatins barbecue stand when an unidentified gunman approached and began shooting indiscriminately towards the pop-up tents where customers were gathered.
Dickerson and a 34-year-old man were struck by the gunfire. Despite being rushed to Harbor-UCLA Medical Center, Dickerson succumbed to her injuries and was pronounced dead at 3 p.m.
The suspect, described as a black man wearing a mask or bandana, fled the scene after the shooting. The motive behind the attack remains unclear, but police believe that Dickerson was not the intended target. Surveillance footage from the area is being reviewed by the Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) as part of their ongoing investigation. Dickerson's death marked the second time her family had to endure the loss of a child to gun violence, as her brother Harvey was also fatally shot in 2004.
Dickerson was remembered by her family and friends as a caring and gentle person who worked multiple jobs to support her music career. Her mother, Valarie Holyfield, described her as a 'go-getter' who found solace in writing songs after her brother's death. The LAPD has urged anyone with information about the shooting to come forward, offering anonymity through Crime Stoppers.
