Jose Martin Hernandez, aged 56, was tragically found shot to death on November 6, 2016, in Hayward, California. He was discovered alongside Leonides Rocha, 42, both suffering from gunshot wounds in the area of Manon Avenue and Ranker Place. The two men were found outside an apartment building where they lived. Initial reports did not confirm their relationship, although social media and other sources suggested they were related. The incident marked the 12th homicide in Hayward for the year 2016, surpassing the previous year's total.

The investigation into their deaths revealed that the double homicide was linked to an ongoing gang feud in the area. Hayward police identified the incident as part of a violent three-month conflict between rival subsets of a Northern California street gang. This period saw multiple homicides, including back-to-back killings in August 2016. The police conducted a large-scale wiretap investigation to gather evidence against the suspects involved in these crimes.

Two suspects, Anthony Wolfe Jr. and Oscar Aguilar, were eventually arrested and charged in connection with the murders of Hernandez and Rocha. Wolfe, 24, pleaded no contest to two counts of voluntary manslaughter and accepted a 21-year state prison term as part of a plea deal with Alameda County prosecutors. Aguilar, 23, also pleaded no contest to two counts of voluntary manslaughter and received a six-year prison term. During the preliminary hearing, Hayward police testified that Wolfe and Aguilar were affiliated with a South Hayward gang, with Wolfe being a member and Aguilar an associate. The gang rivalry was cited as the motive behind the killings, with Wolfe allegedly shouting gang-related phrases before the shooting.

The case highlighted the ongoing issue of gang violence in Hayward and the broader Northern California region. Despite the arrests and convictions, the investigation underscored the challenges law enforcement faces in addressing gang-related crimes and the impact of such violence on the community. The deaths of Jose Martin Hernandez and Leonides Rocha remain a somber reminder of the consequences of gang conflicts and the importance of continued efforts to combat gang activity in the area.
