Mohammed Mizanur Rahman, a 34-year-old man originally from Bangladesh, was tragically shot to death on January 17, 2017, in Los Feliz, Los Angeles. Rahman was working the overnight shift as a clerk at a Chevron gas station on North Vermont Avenue when the incident occurred. Around 3:30 a.m., a man entered the gas station, made a purchase, and then returned to the counter, brandishing a handgun and demanding money. Despite Rahman's compliance, the assailant shot him.
Rahman managed to call 911 and was transported to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 5:25 a.m. The gunman fled the scene in a light-colored car.
Rahman was well-liked by his colleagues and local residents. He was known for his polite and talkative nature, often inquiring about the well-being of his customers. Rahman was also an MBA student, working nights to support his education and send money back to his family in Bangladesh. His death shocked the community, which is typically considered a safe neighborhood.
Following the murder, a 25-year-old man named Kayshon Moody was arrested and charged with suspicion of murder, robbery, and other related allegations. Moody was accused of killing Rahman during the robbery at the Chevron station. The charges included special-circumstance allegations of murder during a robbery and discharging a firearm in an act of violence, which could make Moody eligible for the death penalty if found guilty. Moody was held without bail, and his arraignment was scheduled for February 21, 2017. The police have not disclosed how they identified Moody as a suspect, but the investigation led to his arrest shortly after the incident.
