Daniel Jacob Sevilla, a 21-year-old resident of Long Beach, California, was tragically shot and killed on January 25, 2017. The incident occurred around 2 a.m. in the 1300 block of Wesley Drive. Long Beach police responded to reports of a shooting and found Sevilla with multiple gunshot wounds. Despite immediate life-saving efforts, he was pronounced dead at the scene at 2:37 a.m. The attacker fled before officers arrived, and the motive for the shooting was initially unclear.
However, it was later revealed that the incident was not random.
Further investigation uncovered that Sevilla had arranged to sell a bottle of codeine cough syrup, a substance often used to make narcotic cocktails. He had posted an online ad offering the bottle for $450. On the night of the incident, Sevilla was contacted by a buyer who arranged to meet him. When Sevilla went outside to complete the transaction, he was gunned down. His girlfriend, who was inside their home, heard the gunshots and found Sevilla lying on the ground. A neighbor attempted CPR, but Sevilla succumbed to his injuries.
The investigation led to the arrest of Brandon Parker, a 19-year-old from Compton, two days after the shooting. Parker was charged with one count of murder and possession of an assault weapon. Detectives tracked Parker through the phone number he used to contact Sevilla. A search of Parker's home revealed a bottle of codeine syrup, a shotgun, a 9 mm handgun, and a bullet hole in his car's bumper. Additionally, more than a dozen shell casings from at least two different guns were found at the scene, indicating that another individual might have fired back at Parker. Parker pleaded not guilty to the charges and was held without bail.
The case highlighted the dangers associated with illegal drug transactions and the tragic consequences that can result. The Long Beach community was left mourning the loss of a young father, and the investigation into the incident underscored the complexities of solving such crimes. The legal proceedings against Parker continued as authorities sought justice for Daniel Sevilla and his family.
