Jose Fernando Arellano, a 31-year-old Latino man, was tragically shot and killed on March 20, 2017, in Boyle Heights, Los Angeles. The incident occurred around 7 a.m. near the intersection of East Eighth Street and South Fresno Street. Arellano was about to get into his Honda Civic when he was approached by a dark-colored, four-door vehicle with two occupants. An exchange of words ensued between Arellano and a passenger of the vehicle, which quickly escalated when the suspect opened fire.
Witnesses reported hearing five to six gunshots, and Arellano was pronounced dead at the scene shortly after 7:13 a.m.
Arellano, who worked as a landscaper at a funeral home, lived in San Bernardino County and had no prior arrest record. The Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) launched an investigation into the shooting, but the motive remained unclear. Authorities stated that the shooting did not appear to be gang-related, and there was no immediate evidence to suggest that Arellano and the suspect knew each other prior to the encounter.
