On May 3, 2017, Raynah Prabhu, 53, and her husband Naren Prabhu, 54, were tragically killed in their home in San Jose, California. The couple was allegedly shot by their daughter's ex-boyfriend, Mirza Tatlic, during a violent confrontation. Tatlic, who had a history of domestic violence and mental illness, had previously been issued a restraining order by the Prabhus' daughter, Rachel Prabhu.
On the night of the incident, the Prabhus' 20-year-old son reported the shooting to the police, stating that his parents had been shot and his younger brother was still inside the house.
When the police arrived, they found Naren Prabhu dead in the doorway. Tatlic was using the couple's 13-year-old son as a human shield but later released him unharmed. Despite efforts by police negotiators to convince Tatlic to surrender, he pointed a handgun at the officers, prompting Officer Jacob Morris to fire at least one round, killing Tatlic. The bodies of Raynah and Naren Prabhu were found inside the house.
The case was investigated by multiple agencies, including the Santa Clara County District Attorney's Office, the police homicide unit, the police internal affairs unit, the City Attorney's Office, and the Office of the Independent Police Auditor.
