Jorge Ortega Gonzalez, a 35-year-old resident of San Fernando, California, was tragically found dead on June 15, 2017. According to the Los Angeles County coroner’s records, Gonzalez was fatally shot in the head in his one-room building located behind an apartment complex on Griswold Avenue. His family discovered him bleeding and unresponsive around 7:30 p.m. and immediately called 911. Despite their efforts, Gonzalez was pronounced dead at the scene at 7:45 p.m. The investigation revealed no signs of robbery, as nothing appeared to be missing from his home, leading authorities to believe that the motive behind the shooting was not theft.
The investigation into Gonzalez's death took a significant turn when Jason Felix, a 23-year-old suspected drug trafficker, was arrested in Utah on June 17, 2017, just two days after the murder. Felix was pulled over by the Utah Highway Patrol during a routine traffic stop, where authorities discovered narcotics and a firearm in his possession. Subsequent investigations linked Felix to the fatal shooting of Gonzalez. On August 4, 2017, a warrant was issued for Felix's arrest, charging him with Gonzalez's murder. Investigators believe that Gonzalez's involvement in methamphetamine distribution might have led to his murder, suggesting that the incident was a "narcotics transaction gone awry."
Felix's arrest in Utah also led to federal charges for the transportation of narcotics.
