On July 1, 2017, Nereida Villanueva was tragically killed in a shooting incident at her apartment in Whittier, California. The incident occurred during a custody exchange when her ex-husband, Efrem Ruben Lozoya, arrived to drop off their daughter. Upon being let into the apartment by their son, Lozoya proceeded to shoot Villanueva and her boyfriend, who was also present at the time.
