On July 1, 2017, Nereida Villanueva was tragically killed in a shooting incident at her apartment in Whittier, California. The incident occurred during a custody exchange when her ex-husband, Efrem Ruben Lozoya, arrived to drop off their daughter. Upon being let into the apartment by their son, Lozoya proceeded to shoot Villanueva and her boyfriend, who was also present at the time. Villanueva succumbed to her injuries at the scene, while her boyfriend was left paralyzed.
The couple's children, who were in the apartment during the shooting, ran to a neighbor's home for safety.
Following the shooting, Lozoya fled the scene but later turned himself in to the authorities. He was subsequently charged with second-degree murder and attempted murder, with additional allegations of intentionally discharging a firearm causing great bodily injury and death. The case was investigated by the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department, Homicide Bureau. Lozoya pleaded guilty to the charges and was sentenced to 40 years to life in state prison in August 2019.
