Justin Alongino Holmes, a 21-year-old African American man, was tragically shot and killed on October 1, 2017, in the Manchester Square neighborhood of Los Angeles. Holmes and two companions were walking west on West 78th Street near South Western Avenue when they were approached by two individuals who inquired about their gang affiliation. Despite Holmes not being a documented gang member, one of the assailants pulled out a gun and shot him.
The two companions managed to escape the gunfire, while the assailants fled the scene in a black sedan. Holmes was rushed to a hospital but was pronounced dead shortly after arrival.
The case drew significant attention due to the involvement of Cameron Terrell, an 18-year-old white teenager from Palos Verdes, who was identified as the getaway driver. Terrell, along with two African American juveniles, was charged with murder, premeditated attempted murder, and gang-related enhancements. The case sparked controversy and discussions about racial disparities in the justice system, especially after Terrell was released on a $5 million bail, while his co-defendants remained in custody without bail.
Terrell's trial concluded with his acquittal in July 2018, a verdict that further fueled public outcry. The two juveniles, however, faced continued legal proceedings.
