David Charles Greer, a 37-year-old man from Compton, California, was tragically killed on December 28, 2017. On that fateful evening, deputies responded to a call about a gunshot victim around 10:30 p.m. They found a car in the middle of East Caldwell Street with David Greer and his cousin, Brian Keith Greer, lying nearby. Both men had been shot multiple times and were pronounced dead at the scene shortly after 10:38 p.m.
The cousins, who were born just nine days apart, had spent the day together, visiting family and friends, and were planning to take groceries back to Brian's grandmother before they were killed.
David Greer had a troubled past, having been involved in gang activities during his youth. He was one of two men charged in the 2001 gang-related shooting of Kevin Fauria. Greer pleaded no contest to voluntary manslaughter, with allegations that the crime involved a gun and was committed to benefit a gang. He was sentenced to 17 years in prison and was released just five days before his death. Despite his past, David was reportedly trying to turn his life around, planning to look for work and stay away from gang life.
Brian Greer, on the other hand, had taken a different path. He attended a magnet high school and earned a bachelor's degree in business management and a master's degree. He worked as a social worker and was preparing to open a Burgerim franchise in Compton. The cousins had maintained a close relationship, writing to each other regularly while David was in prison and spending the December holidays together.
The investigation into their deaths revealed that the cousins were likely victims of a robbery. Authorities circulated a composite photo of a suspect described as a black male, about 6 feet tall and 180 pounds, between 35 and 38 years old. The suspect was seen leaving the scene in a white four-door car with tinted windows, possibly a Chrysler 200. Despite these efforts, the case remains unsolved, and investigators continue to seek information from the public to help solve the double murder.
