On January 19, 2024, at approximately 4:50 p.m., 28-year-old Eric Ruffins of Carson, California, was fatally shot in the 15600 block of Atlantic Avenue, just north of Alondra Boulevard, in an unincorporated area near Compton. The Los Angeles County Medical Examiner-Coroner determined the cause of death to be a gunshot wound to the back, ruling the manner of death as homicide.
In the initial aftermath of the shooting, authorities did not release information regarding potential suspects or motives. The Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department urged anyone with information to contact their Homicide Bureau or Crime Stoppers to assist in the investigation.
Subsequent investigations led to the arrest of two individuals in connection with Ruffins' death. One of the suspects, identified as 22-year-old Denmonne Lee, had a prior criminal history. At the age of 16, Lee was involved in a 2018 robbery that resulted in the death of former Marine John Ruh. Initially charged with murder, Lee was prosecuted as a juvenile under policies implemented by Los Angeles County District Attorney George Gascón, which aimed to avoid trying juveniles as adults.
