Greggory Casillas V, a 30-year-old police officer with the Pomona Police Department, tragically lost his life on March 9, 2018, in Pomona, California. Officer Casillas was fatally shot while attempting to arrest a suspect following a vehicle pursuit. The incident began when officers attempted to stop a vehicle for reckless driving. The driver, later identified as Isaias De Jesus Valencia, fled the scene, leading officers on a chase that ended when he crashed into another vehicle and fled on foot into an apartment. As Officer Casillas and his partner approached the apartment to make contact, Valencia fired through the door, striking both officers. Officer Casillas succumbed to his injuries at a local hospital, while his partner survived.
The suspect, Isaias De Jesus Valencia, remained barricaded inside the apartment for over 15 hours before surrendering to law enforcement. Valencia was subsequently charged with the murder of Officer Casillas and multiple counts of attempted murder of a peace officer. The case proceeded to trial, where Valencia was found guilty of first-degree murder. The jury also found true special circumstance allegations, including the murder of a peace officer in the performance of his duties and murder to avoid or prevent a lawful arrest. Additionally, Valencia was found guilty of personally and intentionally discharging a firearm.
In June 2024, Valencia was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole. The sentencing also included a separate term of 278 years to life for the additional charges. During the sentencing hearing, Officer Casillas' partner, who was also injured in the shooting, spoke about the lasting impact of the incident, including his struggles with PTSD, anxiety, and depression. The court proceedings highlighted the profound loss felt by the Pomona Police Department and the community, as well as the enduring legacy of Officer Casillas' dedication and sacrifice.
Officer Casillas had served with the Pomona Police Department for six months and was still in field training at the time of his death. He had previously worked as a civilian with the department for three years before entering the police academy. In recognition of his service and sacrifice, a section of the I-10 freeway between North San Antonio and Mountain Avenues was renamed the Pomona Officer Greggory Casillas Memorial Highway in August 2018. His death and the subsequent legal proceedings underscore the dangers faced by law enforcement officers and the profound impact of such tragedies on their families and communities.
