Victor Vasquez Lopez, a 36-year-old resident of Santa Cruz, California, tragically lost his life on April 20, 2018, following a violent altercation in Watsonville. The incident occurred after a dispute in the Watsonville branch of the Santa Cruz County Superior Court, where Lopez and Miguel Castaneda, also of Santa Cruz, were attending a family court session. The court bailiffs had to separate the two men due to their disagreement.
After the court session, the conflict escalated on westbound Riverside Drive, where a white Toyota pickup, driven by Castaneda, collided with Lopez's black BMW. Witnesses reported that Castaneda exited his vehicle and shot Lopez multiple times, including a fatal shot to the head. Lopez was airlifted to an out-of-county trauma center but succumbed to his injuries the following day.
Miguel Castaneda was arrested at the scene without incident and initially charged with attempted murder and assault with a deadly weapon. Following Lopez's death, the charges were upgraded to murder. Castaneda was held in Santa Cruz County Jail with a bail set at $750,000. The case proceeded to trial, where Castaneda took the stand in his own defense, describing the moments leading up to the shooting.
