Emilio, along with his friend Jennifer Josie Martinez, 24, and another companion, had driven up the hillside to enjoy the scenic view and celebrate with some music and drinks. As they were dancing and enjoying their evening, a car driven by Jose Luis Benitez Sanchez approached them.
One of Sanchez's friends mistakenly believed that Emilio was making a threatening hand gesture, which led to a deadly confrontation.
Sanchez, who was driving a stolen vehicle, pulled up to the group and, after a brief exchange of words, abruptly opened fire on Emilio and Jennifer, fatally wounding both. The third friend managed to find cover and survive the attack, later providing crucial eyewitness testimony.
