On July 2, 2018, Calixto Ramirez, aged 51, was found dead in a maroon Chevrolet pickup truck on the Ridgewood Grade near Willits, California. The Mendocino County Sheriff's Office, along with California Highway Patrol officers and local firefighters, responded to a report of a vehicle blocking traffic. Upon arrival, they discovered Calixto Ramirez deceased from gunshot wounds, and his son, Miguel Angel Ramirez Davila, critically injured.
Miguel succumbed to his injuries two days later in a Santa Rosa hospital.
The investigation quickly identified Ubaldo Ramirez Davila, the 23-year-old son of Calixto and brother of Miguel, as the primary suspect. Ubaldo was arrested the following day in Covelo, California, after law enforcement received tips regarding his whereabouts. He was found in a parking lot and taken into custody without incident. Ubaldo later admitted to shooting his father and brother while sitting in the backseat of the pickup truck. He claimed the killings occurred during a sudden quarrel, leading to charges of voluntary manslaughter.
In November 2020, Ubaldo Ramirez Davila was sentenced to 24 years and four months in state prison after pleading guilty to two counts of voluntary manslaughter. The court determined that Ubaldo had not formed a prior intent to kill, which is a key element in voluntary manslaughter cases. He must serve at least 20.5 years before being eligible for parole and is expected to be deported to Mexico upon completion of his sentence. The tragic incident and subsequent legal proceedings have left a lasting impact on the community, highlighting the devastating consequences of familial violence.
