The incident that led to his death occurred on July 2, 2018, when he was shot by his brother, Ubaldo Ramirez Davila, while they were traveling in a maroon Chevrolet pickup truck on the Ridgewood Grade near the turnoff to the Golden Rule community. The shooting also resulted in the death of their father, Calixto Ramirez Guererro. Miguel was critically injured and succumbed to his injuries in a Santa Rosa hospital two days later.

Upon arrival, they discovered the two victims inside the truck, with one already deceased and the other critically injured. Ubaldo Ramirez Davila eventually admitted to the shootings, stating that he had not formed a prior intent to kill, which led to his charges being classified as voluntary manslaughter. He pleaded guilty to two counts of voluntary manslaughter and was sentenced to 24 years and four months in state prison. According to the terms of his sentence, he must serve at least 20.5 years before becoming eligible for parole. Additionally, upon completion of his prison term, he is to be deported to Mexico.
