On the day of his death, Scott was confronted by Tyler Smith, a man who believed Scott had burglarized his home and stolen a firearm from a safe. Smith, armed with a gun, attacked Scott upon his return home, hitting him with the weapon before fatally shooting him in the head. Smith then placed Scott's body in the back of Scott's own SUV, which was later found abandoned by a security guard. The murder weapon was never recovered.
Following the incident, Tyler Smith was arrested in Nevada in July 2019. He was charged with first-degree murder and other related offenses. In February 2024, Smith was convicted of first-degree murder during a robbery and was subsequently sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole. The case highlighted the tragic consequences of misguided beliefs and violent actions, leaving a lasting impact on the Sacramento community.
