Raymond Delval, a 40-year-old resident of Oxnard, California, tragically lost his life on August 30, 2019. The incident occurred at a home on Berkshire Street in Oxnard, where Delval was found with a gunshot wound to his chest. Despite the efforts of first responders, he was pronounced dead at the scene. Delval and the suspect, Jaime Villarreal, were both residents of the Berkshire Street home, although they were not related. The initial call for service had seemingly resolved the tension, but the situation escalated later that night, leading to the fatal shooting.
Jaime Villarreal, 43, was identified as the suspect and was subsequently charged with murder. Villarreal faced additional charges, including being a felon in possession of a firearm and ammunition. He had a prior criminal record, including convictions for felony robbery with a firearm and felony attempted robbery in 1996. At the time of the shooting, there was also a restraining order against Villarreal, which prohibited him from possessing firearms. Villarreal was taken into custody and booked into Ventura County jail, with bail set at $1.05 million. During his arraignment, he did not enter a plea, and the Public Defender’s Office was appointed to represent him.
The case against Villarreal proceeded to trial, where he was ultimately found not guilty of murder or voluntary manslaughter. The jury convicted him of being a felon in possession of a firearm, felon in possession of ammunition, and possession of a short-barreled shotgun. Villarreal was scheduled to be sentenced on July 6, 2023, for the firearm-related charges.
