John David Noonan, aged 41, tragically lost his life on January 23, 2020, in Chico, California. The incident occurred in the parking lot of a Motel 6 on Manzanita Drive. Noonan was shot twice by Eric Allen, who was seated in the back of a car driven by Justin Cozakas, with Monica Ruggiero, Noonan's recent ex-girlfriend, in the front passenger seat.
The motive behind the murder was linked to Noonan's theft of drugs and money from Ruggiero, which led her to hire Cozakas and Allen to either retrieve the stolen items or exact revenge.
The investigation revealed that Ruggiero had lured Noonan to the Motel 6 parking lot through text messages. Upon Noonan's arrival, an argument ensued, during which Allen shot Noonan from the back seat of the car. The suspects fled the scene, leaving Noonan to succumb to his injuries in the parking lot. Chico police detectives swiftly apprehended all involved parties in February 2020.
Eric Allen, who admitted to the shooting, pled no contest to first-degree murder and was sentenced to 25 years to life in prison. However, due to the "Elder Parole program," he may be eligible for parole after 20 years. Cozakas and Ruggiero, both charged with first-degree homicide, were also detained and awaited trial. The case highlighted the tragic consequences of personal vendettas and the swift justice served by law enforcement and the judicial system.
