Johnny Jamar Osby was arrested seven days after the murder. During the trial, it was revealed that Osby had a motive rooted in a previous altercation. On March 26, 2020, Osby was beaten and robbed at a party attended by Elysee. In retaliation, Osby posted videos on his Snapchat account threatening to murder those responsible for his beating. Osby admitted during the trial that he had purchased a black-market Glock-style "ghost gun" and modified it to function as a machine gun. He claimed that he acted in self-defense, believing that Elysee and his friend were reaching for a gun. However, the physical evidence did not support Osby's self-defense claim. The jury found that Elysee was ambushed and had no chance to react.
