Leah, along with her twin sister Caira Rachel Christopher, was fatally shot by Dwayne Edward Groves Jr., the ex-boyfriend of their mother, Joann Hoyt. The incident occurred at their home on Central Avenue. Groves, who had been in a relationship with Hoyt for six years, was considered a father figure by the girls.
