Leah Sylvania Christopher, a 15-year-old from Lemon Grove, California, tragically lost her life on April 15, 2020. Leah, along with her twin sister Caira Rachel Christopher, was fatally shot by Dwayne Edward Groves Jr., the ex-boyfriend of their mother, Joann Hoyt. The incident occurred at their home on Central Avenue. Groves, who had been in a relationship with Hoyt for six years, was considered a father figure by the girls.
However, on that fateful day, he arrived at their home with a sinister plan. Shortly before the shooting, Groves called Hoyt and ominously mentioned that he had "figured it all out and had a plan".
The tragic event unfolded when Groves fired a gunshot through a sliding glass door before entering the home and fatally shooting both Leah and Caira. During the attack, Groves also assaulted Hoyt's 22-year-old son with the gun. Hoyt and her other children were present in the house but managed to escape. Following the shooting, sheriff's deputies, with the assistance of a patrol helicopter, conducted a search and found Groves hiding in a backyard a few houses away from the crime scene.
Groves was arrested and charged with multiple offenses, including first-degree murder, assault with a semi-automatic firearm, burglary, shooting at an occupied house, child abuse, and being a felon in possession of a firearm. He pleaded guilty to the charges in El Cajon Superior Court. During his arraignment, Deputy District Attorney Meredith Pro highlighted the premeditated nature of the crime, noting Groves' phone call to Hoyt and his subsequent actions.
In April 2023, Groves was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole, plus an additional 72 years to life. At the sentencing hearing, Hoyt and her family members expressed their profound grief and betrayal. Hoyt described Groves as someone who had "played the nice guy" and won over their hearts, only to later break them. The girls' grandparents also spoke about the devastating impact of the crime on their family, particularly on Groves' own young daughters who were present in the home during the shooting.
This case has left a lasting scar on the community and the family, with the loss of two young lives who were just beginning their journey. The sentencing of Groves, while providing a measure of justice, cannot undo the pain and loss experienced by the victims' family. The District Attorney's office emphasized the deep sense of loss and pain that accompanies the murder of innocent children, hoping that the sentence would offer some degree of healing to the affected family.
