Jessie Garcia, a 47-year-old resident of San Diego, was tragically killed on June 7, 2020, in Irvine, California. The incident occurred on the southbound Interstate 5 freeway, where Garcia was fatally shot while traveling in a rental car. The suspect, Vincent Dulay Deguzman Jr., 39, was identified as the perpetrator. Deguzman, who was driving the vehicle, allegedly shot Garcia and then abandoned the car on the shoulder of the freeway near the Culver Drive on-ramp.
The vehicle, a Kia Altima, was found with Garcia's body inside, leading to an immediate investigation by the California Highway Patrol (CHP).
Following the discovery, CHP investigators quickly identified Deguzman as the primary suspect. On June 11, 2020, a search warrant was issued for his arrest. Deguzman was tracked down to a Hilton Garden Inn in San Diego by the San Diego Fugitive Task Force. After a standoff that lasted several hours, Deguzman surrendered peacefully and was taken into custody without further incident. He was subsequently booked into the Orange County Jail on a murder charge and held without bail.
The relationship between Garcia and Deguzman, as well as the motive for the shooting, remains unclear. Authorities have not disclosed how the two men knew each other or what led to the fatal encounter. The case has drawn significant attention due to the nature of the crime and the subsequent manhunt that led to Deguzman's arrest. As of now, Deguzman is awaiting trial, and the investigation into the circumstances surrounding Garcia's death continues.
