Raymond Alcala, a 20-year-old resident of Irvine, California, tragically lost his life on October 26, 2019, in a violent home invasion. The incident occurred in the early hours of the morning at his residence on Bayleaf Lane. According to reports, the Irvine Police Department and the Orange County Fire Authority were dispatched to the scene around 5:45 a.m. after receiving a call about an injured man. Upon arrival, officers found Alcala suffering from multiple gunshot wounds.
Despite being rushed to a local hospital, he was pronounced dead shortly after arrival. Another man in the home was also assaulted but survived the attack.
The investigation into Alcala's death revealed that the home invasion was not a random act of violence but a targeted robbery. Three suspects were identified and subsequently charged in connection with the murder. Devon Quinland, a 33-year-old resident of Westminster, California, Andre Andrews, 34, from Miramar, Florida, and Omar Miller, 41, from Lauderdale, Florida, were all implicated in the crime. Miller, a former Jamaican police officer, along with his accomplices, faced multiple charges including felony counts of murder, conspiracy to commit a crime, and assault with a firearm. The charges were further aggravated by special circumstances of murder committed during the commission of a robbery and burglary, making them eligible for the death penalty if convicted.
The arrests were the result of a collaborative effort between the Irvine Police Department and the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI). Quinland was apprehended in Westminster on December 17, 2019, while Andrews and Miller were arrested in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, on the same day. The suspects were extradited to California and held without bail in the Orange County Jail. The arraignment for all three defendants was scheduled for February 28, 2020, at the Central Justice Center.
