Gurman Singh, a 12-year-old boy from Ceres, California, tragically lost his life on June 15, 2020, in a harrowing incident that has left the community in shock. Gurman and his mother, 34-year-old Manpreet Kaur, were victims of a murder-suicide carried out by Manpreet's husband, 55-year-old Jang Singh. The family had recently moved from India to live with Jang Singh, and on the night of the incident, they were sleeping in the living room of their apartment due to the presence of Jang Singh's 80-year-old mother.
In the early hours of the morning, Jang Singh entered the living room and, without any apparent provocation, shot both Manpreet and Gurman while they slept. He then proceeded to his bedroom, where he turned the gun on himself. The horrific event was captured on a video surveillance system that Jang Singh had installed in the apartment. His elderly mother, awakened by the gunshots, sought help from a neighbor who called 911. The police arrived to find the bodies of Manpreet and Gurman in the living room and Jang Singh in the bedroom.
The investigation revealed that there were no prior indications of such violence, and the motive behind Jang Singh's actions remains unclear. Friends and acquaintances of Manpreet described her as feeling increasingly isolated and controlled in her new environment, with limited access to communication and social interaction. The Ceres community was deeply affected by the tragedy, and local authorities, along with the Ceres Unified School District, provided counseling and support to those impacted by the loss.
There were no arrests made in connection with the incident, as the perpetrator, Jang Singh, had taken his own life. The case was classified as a murder-suicide, and no further legal actions or litigations were pursued.
