Juan Carlos Valdovinos, a 27-year-old resident of Richmond, California, was tragically killed in a shooting incident on July 11, 2020. The incident occurred in the early hours of the morning on South 3rd Street in Richmond's Santa Fe neighborhood. According to reports, officers responded to a ShotSpotter alert and a subsequent 911 call reporting a person down on the sidewalk. Upon arrival, they found Valdovinos suffering from multiple gunshot wounds.
Despite the efforts of paramedics and firefighters, he was pronounced dead at the scene.
The investigation revealed that the shooting stemmed from a disagreement involving a small group of individuals. Valdovinos and another man, Jacinto Chavarria, were reportedly arguing inside a parked vehicle. The argument escalated, leading Chavarria to exit the vehicle, produce a handgun, and fire multiple shots at Valdovinos. The suspect, Jacinto Chavarria, was arrested later that same day at the El Cerrito Plaza BART Station. He was taken into custody without incident and was subsequently charged with murder. Chavarria was held in the Martinez county jail without bail, awaiting further legal proceedings.
The case was presented to the Contra Costa County District Attorney's Office for review.
