According to reports, the situation escalated when the driver of the other vehicle called her ex-boyfriend, Damion Salinas, who arrived at the scene with several other men. An argument ensued, during which Salinas allegedly asked Thao about his gang affiliation before shooting him in the chest. Thao's death was a devastating blow to his family, including his sister, Hollywood actress Brooke Chia Thao, who has been vocal in her pursuit of justice for her brother.
The investigation into Thao's murder was complex and prolonged. Initially, the shooter and his accomplices fled the scene, leaving the police with few leads.
