Daniel Gonzalez, a promising young boxer from Moreno Valley, California, tragically lost his life on September 7, 2020. Known for his association with Floyd Mayweather's promotional team, Gonzalez was shot and killed on Labor Day. The incident occurred when Gonzalez, along with two minors, was attacked in Moreno Valley. The authorities responded to a call reporting an assault with a deadly weapon and found three male victims with gunshot wounds.
While the two minors were transported to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, Gonzalez succumbed to his injuries at the scene.
The investigation into Gonzalez's death led to the identification and arrest of three suspects: Joseph Lewis Goldsmith, Andre Dimitri Richee, and Lee Albert Mooring. Goldsmith, a 28-year-old from Riverside, surrendered to authorities and was charged with first-degree murder, two counts of attempted murder, and sentence-enhancing gun use allegations. His co-defendants, Richee and Mooring, faced similar charges, with Richee also accused of shooting at an inhabited structure. The suspects allegedly arrived in a Chevrolet Cruze and opened fire on Gonzalez and the two teenagers, killing Gonzalez instantly. The motive for the attack remains unclear.
The legal proceedings against the suspects progressed with Goldsmith turning himself in at the sheriff's Moreno Valley station. He was arraigned and scheduled for a felony settlement conference. Richee and Mooring were also taken into custody shortly after the incident. The trial revealed that on the night of the shooting, Gonzalez had gathered with family and friends at his apartment complex's pool. A white sedan approached, and one of the occupants asked Gonzalez and his brother about their gang affiliations. Despite their denial of any gang involvement, the car returned later, and the occupants opened fire, resulting in Gonzalez's death from a gunshot wound to the head.
In August 2022, Mooring and Richee were convicted of murder and attempted murder. They were found guilty of killing Gonzalez and wounding the two teenage boys. The trial included evidence from surveillance videos and testimonies, including a statement from Richee's girlfriend, who identified the suspects and described their actions following the shooting. Goldsmith, who had fled to Texas, was arrested and later pleaded guilty to being an accessory after the fact. He was sentenced to the time he had already served in jail. The convictions brought some closure to the tragic loss of Daniel Gonzalez, a young athlete whose promising career was cut short by senseless violence.
