Jamie Eugene Wilcox, aged 44, was tragically killed on September 23, 2020, in Talmage, a community near Ukiah, California. The incident occurred early in the morning at a family property on Twining Road. According to reports, the Mendocino County Sheriff's Office responded to a call about a shooting at around 8:07 a.m. Upon arrival, deputies found Wilcox deceased at the scene and another victim, a 28-year-old man, critically injured. The injured man was airlifted to a hospital for treatment. The suspect, identified as 65-year-old Thomas Dean Jones, was present at the scene and surrendered to authorities without incident.
The investigation revealed that the shooting stemmed from a family dispute over the potential development of the property. Jones, who was Wilcox's stepfather, was reportedly involved in a heated argument with Wilcox and the other victim, who was Wilcox's spouse. The dispute escalated, leading Jones to open fire on the two men as they were preparing to leave for work. Wilcox was pronounced dead at the scene, while his spouse survived the attack but sustained severe injuries.
Following the incident, Jones was arrested and charged with multiple offenses, including first-degree murder, attempted murder, and being armed during the commission of a felony. He was held without bail in the Mendocino County Jail. The case proceeded to trial, where Jones opted to represent himself despite advice to the contrary. In February 2022, a Mendocino County Superior Court jury found Jones guilty of the premeditated murder of Wilcox and the attempted murder of Wilcox's spouse.
