Trenton Way was killed during a robbery of the Kangaroo gas station he worked at. In the early morning hours of December 16, 2015, Trenton James Way, a 27-year-old male, was working his shift as a store clerk at the Kangaroo gas station in Bessemer, Alabama. His life was tragically cut short when a man entered the store and shot him multiple times during a robbery. Bessemer police responded to the scene at 1:32 a.m. and found Way lying behind the counter.
He was pronounced dead just thirteen minutes after their arrival.
The assailant, whose image was captured on the store's surveillance cameras, fled the scene with a trash bag filled with cash and merchandise. The Bessemer Police Department quickly released the footage to the public in the hopes of identifying the person responsible for this violent act. The suspect was described as a Black male, believed to be 5 feet 10 inches tall or shorter, with a medium build. He was seen wearing a dark-colored hoodie and faded blue jeans that had a tear on the front left pocket. The man was armed with a black handgun.
In the days and months that followed, Trenton Way's family pleaded for anyone with information to come forward to help bring closure to their family. Despite the release of the surveillance images and the suspect's description, the case remained a topic of concern for the community. Nine months after the tragic event, his family was still actively seeking justice for his murder, indicating that no arrests had been made at that time. The community was left to mourn the loss of a young man who was killed while simply doing his job.
