Dejante Kennedy, a 25-year-old resident of Pittsburg, California, tragically lost his life on March 31, 2021, in El Sobrante. The incident occurred at an apartment complex on the 4500 block of Appian Way. Kennedy was visiting the apartment of his girlfriend when Pierre Jackson, the ex-boyfriend of Kennedy's girlfriend, forcibly entered the apartment through a window. Jackson, who had previously dated the woman living in the apartment, had moved out about six weeks prior to the incident.
On the night of the shooting, Jackson broke into the apartment around 2:30 a.m. and confronted Kennedy. According to court records, Jackson shot Kennedy multiple times as he begged for his life. Jackson then turned the gun on his ex-girlfriend, shooting her multiple times as well. Neighbors and witnesses identified Jackson as the shooter, despite his attempts to conceal his identity with a red bandana.
Following the incident, Jackson was arrested and charged with the murder of Dejante Kennedy and the attempted murder of his ex-girlfriend. The case went to trial, where Jackson's defense argued that he lacked the mental state to commit murder due to "uncontrollable rage." Despite this defense, Jackson was convicted of attempted murder, but the jury was hung on the murder charge. This led to a plea deal in which Jackson pleaded no contest to second-degree murder. As a result, Jackson was sentenced to 34 years to life in prison. He is currently serving his sentence at North Kern State Prison.
