Marlon De Leon Carrillo, a 44-year-old Latino male, tragically lost his life on May 3, 2021, in Los Angeles, California. The incident occurred near 4209 W. Washington Blvd. in the Mid-City area. According to the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner-Coroner's records, Carrillo was shot and pronounced dead at the scene. The circumstances surrounding his death were particularly harrowing, as he was found lying in the parking lot of a mini-mall, in front of a 7-Eleven store.
This location became the focal point of a double homicide investigation that also claimed the life of 26-year-old Ruben Vasquez.
The events leading up to the shooting were rooted in an altercation that began inside a restaurant and bar within the mini-mall. Carrillo's son had been involved in an argument with other patrons, which escalated and continued outside. Although Carrillo's son had left the scene, the individuals involved in the dispute remained. When Carrillo arrived at the mini-mall, a confrontation ensued between him and the suspects, ultimately resulting in gunfire. Carrillo, who had come to the location to support his son, became an unintended victim of the violence.
The investigation into Carrillo's death led to the arrest of three individuals: Jose Hernandez, 32; Jobany Villatoro, 43; and Gerardo Delcampo, 44, all of Los Angeles. Hernandez and Villatoro were charged with murder and held on $2 million bail each. Delcampo faced accessory to murder charges, along with firearms and narcotics possession charges, and was also held on $2 million bail. The arrests were the result of diligent work by the FBI-LAPD Fugitive Task Force, which apprehended Hernandez and Villatoro on May 18, 2021. Delcampo was taken into custody on the day of the incident when detectives served a search warrant at an undisclosed location.
The case against the suspects was built on the tireless efforts of the West Bureau Homicide Unit, which worked to piece together the events of that fateful night. The investigation revealed that Carrillo's death was a tragic consequence of a dispute that spiraled out of control, leaving his family and the community in mourning.
