Wendy Wood, aged 68, was tragically shot in her Homewood, California home on June 5, 2021. The incident also claimed the life of her husband, Robert Gary Spohr, who was killed by a single gunshot wound. Wendy Wood sustained two gunshot wounds to the head and was immediately hospitalized. Despite surviving the initial attack, she faced a long and arduous recovery process. Wendy spent a month in the intensive care unit and several weeks in rehabilitation, where she had to relearn basic skills such as walking, talking, and eating. Unfortunately, she never regained memory of the incident. Her injuries and the trauma from the attack led to severe depression, and she ultimately died by suicide less than a year later.
The investigation into the shooting led to the arrest of two suspects over two years after the incident. Daniel Serafini, a former Major League Baseball pitcher, and Samantha Scott, a family friend, were charged with the murder of Robert Spohr and the attempted murder of Wendy Wood. Both suspects pleaded not guilty to the charges. The criminal complaint against them included allegations of premeditated attempted murder and intentional killing while lying in wait. Additionally, Serafini faced a charge of child abuse and endangerment.
The case also involved significant legal battles within the family. Adrienne Spohr, the daughter of Wendy Wood and Robert Spohr, filed a wrongful death lawsuit against her sister, Erin Spohr, Serafini, and Scott. The lawsuit accused them of conspiring to kill her parents for financial gain, claiming that Erin and Serafini were financially dependent on the victims. The lawsuit highlighted that Wendy Wood had disinherited Erin because she believed her daughter had a role in the homicide. The court has scheduled a jury trial for March 2025, where both Serafini and Scott face the possibility of life imprisonment if convicted.
