The investigation into Peñaloza's murder led to the identification and arrest of one of the suspects, Anthony Lemus, who turned himself in to the Los Angeles Police Department on July 26, 2021. Lemus, 20 years old at the time, was booked on suspicion of murder and held on $2 million bail. The second suspect, who was also involved in the theft and shooting, remained at large. The police released security footage of the suspects, both described as Hispanic men between the ages of 18 and 20, in an effort to locate the accomplice.
