Toriano Mason, a 20-year-old resident of Sacramento, California, tragically lost his life on August 25, 2021. On that fateful night, the Sacramento County Sheriff's Office received a 911 call reporting an adult male lying on the ground outside a residential apartment complex on North Kiefer Boulevard. Upon arrival, deputies discovered Mason with a gunshot wound to the upper body. Despite the swift response of emergency services, Mason was pronounced dead at the scene.
He was a recent graduate of George Washington Carver High School and had just completed his studies at Barber College, where he was working alongside his father at a local barbershop.
The investigation into Mason's death revealed that he was the victim of a planned robbery. Luis Delvalle, the perpetrator, approached Mason while he was parked in front of his apartment. Delvalle, armed with a firearm, demanded Mason to "give it up" while using a racial slur. When Mason did not comply, Delvalle shot him in the head, killing him instantly. Delvalle fled the scene, but a neighbor quickly discovered Mason's body and alerted the authorities. Sacramento County sheriff’s homicide detectives were able to track down Delvalle and arrested him one week later.
The legal proceedings against Delvalle were extensive. On March 29, 2024, a jury convicted him of first-degree murder and dissuading a witness by force or threat. The jury also found true the allegation that Delvalle personally discharged a firearm causing death. Subsequently, on May 3, 2024, the Honorable Steve White sentenced Delvalle to 54 years to life in prison. This conviction brought some measure of justice to Mason's family and highlighted the severe consequences of such violent crimes. The case underscored the importance of community vigilance and the effectiveness of law enforcement in bringing perpetrators to justice.
