Jason Twyman, a 40-year-old Black man from La Mesa, California, was a Union Pipe Fitter and a graduate of Helix High School. Remembered by loved ones as funny, smart, loving, and a loyal protector, his life was cut short by a shooting in September 2021.
In the early hours of Sunday, September 12, 2021, Jason was in a parking lot in the Grantville neighborhood of San Diego.
At around 1:00 a.m., in the 5800 block of Mission Gorge Road near JT’s Pub & Grill, a man wearing a dark shirt walked up to him. The man fired at Jason before fleeing westbound out of the lot in a dark-colored vehicle. Multiple 911 callers reported the shooting. When officers arrived, they found Jason on the ground next to a motorcycle with at least one gunshot wound to his upper body.
Paramedics rushed Jason to a local hospital, where he underwent emergency surgery for his life-threatening injuries. Despite the medical efforts, he succumbed to his wounds three days later, on September 15, 2021. His death prompted the San Diego Police Department to launch a homicide investigation. Detectives learned that a large crowd of people had been in the parking lot at the time of the shooting but had scattered when police arrived, leaving investigators to search for witnesses.
During their investigation, detectives identified Alvin Wilson, a 32-year-old resident of El Cajon, as the suspect. Police stated that they did not believe Wilson and Jason knew each other and found no evidence of a prior history or dispute between them. The investigation revealed that Wilson had traveled to Ohio. On September 27, 2021, he was arrested by the Ohio Highway Patrol on I-80 in northern Ohio on unrelated charges.
San Diego Police homicide investigators traveled to Ohio, and Wilson was charged with the murder of Jason Twyman. The San Diego Police Department publicly thanked the Ohio Highway Patrol for their assistance in apprehending the suspect. As of October 2021, the case against Alvin Wilson was proceeding through the legal system.
