Gustavo Tavera-Rico, a 32-year-old resident of Hayward, California, tragically lost his life on the night of March 5, 2022. He was fatally shot in an execution-style murder at the N and M Liquor store located at 210 A Street in unincorporated Alameda County. The incident shocked the local community and prompted an immediate investigation by the Alameda County Sheriff’s Office and the Hayward Police Department.
Following the murder, law enforcement officials quickly identified two
suspects: Juan Vera Jr., aged 26, and Bryan Hernandez, aged 22, both residents of Hayward. On March 15, 2022, arrest and search warrants were executed at their homes, leading to their apprehension without incident. During the searches, authorities recovered a significant cache of weapons, including AR-15 rifles, hunting rifles, a shotgun, and handguns. Both Vera and Hernandez were charged with murder and multiple weapons violations. They were held without bail at Santa Rita Jail in Dublin, awaiting their court appearance scheduled for April 20, 2022.
The investigation revealed that the murder was premeditated and carried out in a particularly brutal manner, which led to additional charges and special allegations against the suspects. Vera faced a total of 41 charges, including those related to a separate DUI and weapons-related incident from October 2021. Hernandez faced 13 charges in connection with the murder and weapons violations.
