Do you know who killed Danny Nelson? In the summer of 2014, the life of 36-year-old Danny Louis Nelson, a male known to some as 'Disco,' was cut short on the streets of New Orleans. On June 7th of that year, Nelson was found with multiple gunshot wounds at the intersection of Washington and South Robertson Street in the Central City neighborhood. This area was one he knew well, a place where he had grown up and had only recently returned to, attempting a fresh start after a release from jail just days prior.
For more than a
year, the investigation into Nelson's death languished, with no suspects publicly identified. The case grew cold, a painful reality for his family who sought justice. The silence was finally broken when Nelson's daughter made a public plea for anyone with information to come forward. Her appeal seemingly reached the right ears, as a witness emerged, providing investigators with a name: George Short.
Despite this breakthrough, the path to justice took another turn. In February 2018, law enforcement located and arrested a different man in connection with the murder. Wallace Gilmore, then 41 years old, was taken into custody in New Bedford, Massachusetts, where he was found at a drug treatment program. The arrest was the result of a collaborative effort between the Massachusetts State Police Violent Fugitive Apprehension Unit and the U.S. Marshal's Office. Gilmore was apprehended on a fugitive from justice charge, wanted by the New Orleans Police Department for second-degree murder in the shooting death of Danny Nelson. Following his arrest, Gilmore was held without bail and awaited extradition back to Louisiana to face the charges against him.
