In a tragic turn of events stemming from a domestic dispute, a 23-year-old male, Alfred Johnson IV, lost his life in a shootout in a drugstore parking lot in New Orleans. The incident, described by prosecutors as a 'retribution killing,' was the culmination of a search for Johnson by the father and a cousin of his girlfriend following an argument she had with Johnson the previous day.
The fatal encounter unfolded in the parking lot of a Rite Aid on Gentilly Boulevard.
Believing his daughter had been assaulted during the argument, Christopher Patterson, 48, along with Gerald Barnes, 29, and another cousin, set out to find Johnson. A gun battle erupted in the parking lot, during which authorities believe Barnes shot Johnson while riding in a car driven by Patterson. Johnson apparently returned fire, hitting the unnamed cousin multiple times.
Following the exchange of gunfire, Johnson crashed his car near the intersection of Gentilly Boulevard and Elysian Fields Avenue. He was transported to a hospital where he later died from his injuries. The aftermath of the shooting led to the indictment of both Gerald Barnes and Christopher Patterson on charges of second-degree murder, as determined by an Orleans Parish grand jury.
