Deandre S. Irvin, a 43-year-old resident of Oakland, California, was tragically killed on December 3, 2022. Irvin had been living at a tiny home community in West Oakland, a site designed to provide temporary shelter for homeless residents. The incident occurred in the early hours of the morning, just before 3:20 a.m., when Irvin was shot. Despite being rushed to the hospital, he succumbed to his injuries.
The community, located on Peralta Street, had been operational for about a year and housed approximately 40 residents. Following the incident, the city implemented stricter security measures, including a curfew and mandatory sign-ins for all visitors and residents.
The investigation into Irvin's death revealed that he had been involved in a dispute with the girlfriend of Anthony Alonzo, a fellow resident of the tiny home community. Alonzo, 36, was identified as a suspect shortly after the shooting. He was arrested on a Ramey warrant in late December 2022. Despite his arrest, it took nearly two years for prosecutors to file formal charges against him. During this period, Alonzo maintained his innocence, claiming he was being wrongfully accused. However, evidence, including witness testimonies and recorded jail calls, implicated him in the crime. Witnesses from the community identified Alonzo as the shooter, and his girlfriend, despite initially denying any connection to him, was found to have been in contact with him around the time of the incident.
Alonzo was charged with murder in December 2024 and is currently being held without bail at Santa Rita Jail in Dublin. He is scheduled to appear in court to enter a plea.
