In the Mid-City neighborhood of New Orleans, on the evening of January 4, 2015, Walter Ray Jackson, a 34-year-old male, was found shot to death inside his black Toyota. The vehicle was located in the 2800 block of Palmyra Street around 10:00 p.m. Jackson had just left a friend whom he had driven home after they had been at a bar on Second and Dryades streets. It is believed that after dropping off his friend, someone ambushed his car.
The nature of his wounds suggested the possibility of more than one shooter.
Despite the passage of time, the case remains unsolved, and no arrests have been made in connection with the murder of Walter Jackson. His family, particularly his mother, Cheryl Jackson, has continued to grieve and seek answers. Five years after his death, in January 2020, family and friends gathered for a candlelight vigil in Marrero to honor his memory and plead with the community for any information that might lead to the arrest of his killer or killers. His mother has expressed the profound and unending pain of her loss.
In an effort to generate new leads, Crimestoppers of Greater New Orleans announced a reward for information pertaining to the case in July 2020. Law enforcement officials have indicated that they have not received any new information in some time and are hopeful that the reward will encourage someone to come forward. The investigation into Walter Ray Jackson's death is ongoing, and his family continues to hope for justice and closure.
