Elmer Hardie, an Industrial Training Supervisor at Attica Correctional Facility, died on September 13, 1971, during the infamous Attica prison riot. The riot began on September 9, 1971, when over 1,200 inmates took control of the prison, demanding better living conditions and political rights. The situation escalated quickly, leading to a standoff between the inmates and law enforcement. During the riot, several prison staff members, including Hardie, were taken hostage by the inmates.
