In the summer of 2014, a tragic event cut short the life of 14-year-old Raymond Floyd Patterson III in Buffalo, New York. On August 12th, the young male was fatally shot on a footbridge near Oakmont Avenue. The incident, which also left three other teenagers injured, stemmed from a fight between two teenage girls that escalated dramatically. Patterson and the other victims were not believed to have been involved in the initial altercation. He was a student at the Buffalo Elementary School of Technology #6.
The shooting prompted an immediate and intense investigation by the Buffalo Police Department. Authorities received significant cooperation from a community that was both angered and hurt by the senseless violence. This public assistance was crucial in the swift identification and apprehension of a suspect. Detectives were initially looking for a male in his 20s.
Two days after the shooting, on August 14, 2014, police arrested 28-year-old Joseph Gant. He was taken into custody and charged with second-degree murder and three counts of first-degree assault. At his arraignment, Gant pleaded not guilty and was held without bail. The case proceeded through the legal system, and in June of the following year, Joseph Gant was found guilty of the charges against him. In August 2015, a year after the shooting, Gant was sentenced to 35 years to life in prison for the murder of Raymond Patterson III and the injuries sustained by the other victims. During the sentencing, it was revealed that Patterson was shot in the back, arm, and leg as he tried to flee the chaotic scene.
