In the quiet city of Peekskill, New York, a young Hispanic man's life was cut short in a burst of violence that shattered the December night. On December 20, 2015, 22-year-old Steven Agosto was fatally shot multiple times on Park Street. Police officers on patrol were drawn to the scene by the sound of gunshots and discovered Agosto unresponsive. He was rushed to a local hospital, but his wounds proved to be fatal, and he was pronounced dead.
An autopsy later revealed he had suffered a fatal bullet wound to the head and two additional wounds to his legs. In the immediate aftermath, his family was left grappling with the sudden and tragic loss, with his mother expressing her belief that her son had been intentionally lured to his death.
The Peekskill Police Department launched an intensive investigation into the homicide, piecing together the final hours of Agosto's life through numerous interviews and the execution of search warrants. Their efforts quickly identified a suspect, 24-year-old Janeil Myke, also a resident of Peekskill. Surveillance was established at Myke's residence, and just two days after the shooting, he was taken into custody after a brief foot pursuit as he was leaving his home. During an interview with detectives, Myke admitted to shooting Agosto. Investigators learned that the two men had been involved in a long-standing dispute.
Initially charged with second-degree murder, Janeil Myke later pleaded guilty to a lesser charge of first-degree manslaughter in October 2016. The weapon used in the shooting was determined to be a stolen 9mm handgun. In November 2016, a judge sentenced Myke to 15 years in state prison for his role in the death of Steven Agosto. The investigation also led to a second arrest in January 2016. Evidence connected to the shooting was discovered at the Cortlandt residence of 44-year-old Tyrone Wynn. A search of his home uncovered three handguns, narcotics, and a large sum of cash. Wynn was subsequently charged with criminal possession of a weapon, though authorities did not name him as a suspect in Agosto's murder.
