On a summer evening in Hudson, New York, the life of 31-year-old Kevin Whitening was tragically cut short. On August 22, 2017, Whitening, a male visitor from New York City who was in town to see his family, was fatally shot in the chest on North Third Street. He was rushed to Columbia Memorial Health, but ultimately succumbed to his injuries. His death was a grim chapter in a summer marked by a series of violent clashes between rival drug crews that had gripped the city, with Whitening being an
unintended victim of the ongoing feud.
The investigation into Whitening's death led authorities to identify two suspects: Christian Simmons, a 24-year-old from the Bronx, and DiQuann Powell, also known as 'DaDa.' Simmons was subsequently indicted on a charge of second-degree murder. However, his trial took an unexpected turn when it was revealed that the prosecution had withheld crucial information about a key witness. This revelation led to Simmons' acquittal in November 2022, after the jury deliberated for less than two hours.
In contrast, the case against DiQuann Powell resulted in a conviction. In June 2022, Powell was found guilty of second-degree murder for the death of Kevin Whitening, as well as first-degree assault and first-degree attempted robbery in connection with a separate 2016 incident. The conviction was the culmination of a lengthy five-month investigation into the violent activities of the rival drug factions in Hudson. Powell faced a sentence of up to 50 years to life in state prison for his role in the crimes. The series of shootings that summer, one of which tragically ended Kevin Whitening's life, also resulted in injuries to several other individuals, including two young toddlers.
